Kayode Are was Director General of the Nigerian State Security Service throughout the two terms of President Olusegun Obasanjo (1999-2007). He was replaced by Afakiriya Gadzama in 2007 by President Umaru Yar'Adua.[1]
Kayode Are is an Owu by origin. He had worked with Aliyu Gusau at the Directorate of Military Intelligence, and in 1999 was recommended by Gusau to Obasanjo.[2] He was head of the SSS until 2007.[1]
In April 2010 Kayode Are was appointed Deputy National Security Adviser by President Goodluck Jonathan.[1] This was a newly created position.[3] When Aliyu Gusau resigned as National Security Advisor (NSA), Kayode Are took over as Acting NSA.[1] On 1 October 2010 during the 50 years Golden Jubilee Anniversary there was a bomb blast in Abuja.[4] Jonathan dismissed Are and appointed General Owoye Andrew Azazi as NSA, effective 4 October 2010. The announcement of the change said "The President thanked the outgoing NSA for his services, and wished him well in his future endeavours".[5]
